Patrick Meagher states:
I am the Head Porter of the University of Liverpool. At about 2.15pm. on Monday,9th March,1970,I was on duty in the main foyer of Senate House, Abercromby Square, Liverpool, in company with several of my staff.
A large number of students entered the building, headed by two students whom I know and can identify as ANDREW BLACK and PETER CRESSWELL.
I said to them, ”Just a moment lads, you are to be confined to the hall”. Cresswell said,”Sorry, Mr Meagher, we are coming through”, and with these words about 200 students pushed their way past my colleagues and I.
On Tuesday,10th March 1970, I saw that the students were occupying Committee Rooms 1,2,and 3. I made enquiries to ascertain how they had entered these rooms but the only information I could elicit was the fact that they had entered via the windows which had faulty catches.
At 11.15am on Friday 13th March 1970, I was on duty in the main foyer of Senate House when I received an instruction from the Security Superintendent (Mr FG.Pugh), who was not allowed in the building, that I was to obtain a personal file from his office (Room B56). I went to the office accompanied by a student whom I can identify as JOHN ASPINALL. Standing outside the office were approximately six other students amongst whom I can identify BLACK and CRESWELL. As I unlocked the door I received a push from the rear which forced me into the office and all seven students pushed past me.
ASPINALL went to Mr Pugh’s desk,CRESSWELL went to my desk (which contained confidential information on my staff), and BLACK opened the filing cabinet. I asked them to leave but they refused and commenced to read through all the correspondence in the office. After about twenty minutes of asking them to leave , during which time they informed me,”We have no intention of leaving until we have read all the files”, I went for Mr Jones, the caretaker of Senate House to assist me.
These students did not vacate the office until approximately 2.30pm that day. Amongst the students present in the building and whom I can identify are:
RICHARD DAVIES, ANDREWJ BLACK, JOHN SNOW, DAVID ROBERTSON, JOHN SINCLAIR, PETER GUSACK, IAN WILLIAMS. TE WILLIAMS, RICHARDMORRIS, GAVIN GRAHAM (he has never stayed for long), SUSAN ROSSINGER, PETER CRESSWELL, PAMELA ROSE, MAUREEN O’SULLIVAN, JOHN ASPINALL, O SWINGLER,
I have read the above statement which is true and I have had the opportunity to make any alterations that I so desire.
