Referendum on mass meetings

28 November 1969

The referendum on whether mass meetings should become the sovereign decision-making body of Guild was held today.

The outcome was a defeat for mass meetings and a vote for the status quo, with Guild Council as the policy-making body.  Not surprising, perhaps, given the wording of the referendum:

Do you agree that the Guild of Undergraduates should reject as impracticable, government by sovereign mass meetings, and should affirm its support for the existing form of Guild Council as sovereign body?

The result:

Yes: 1951

No: 690
