Silk for Parliament?

4 March 1969

Politics students were highly amused to read the following in the current Guild Gazette:

Three members of the Politics Department are standing for election to local councils in May.  They include two students, Mrs Iris Warburton and Mr Stan Thorne, and a lecturer, Mr Robert Kilroy-Silk.

In addition to contesting the Raven Meols ward, Mr Kilroy-Silk has been nominated as a possible Labour candidate for the Ormskirk and Crosby constituency in the next Parliamentary election.

“I hope that Politics students will feel able to canvass for me”, he said, “as this would be valuable both for them as regards their studies and for me.”

  1. Stan became an MP too, of course, and died a couple of years ago. I bumped into him occasionally over the years and to his credit he remained a left winger through his time in Parliament – probably became a bit more Stalinist as he got older. I’d forgotten about Iris; I wonder what happened to her. And Silk – whatever happened to him………………?
